- We express our different opinions and beliefs with kindness and consideration for others.
- We work together to ensure the OU is a safe place for all.
- We commit to freedom of speech and academic freedom.
This means we
We actively treat everyone with dignity and respect in our everyday interactions—listening attentively, using inclusive language, and acknowledging different experiences.
We express our opinions and beliefs with kindness and consideration, engaging in constructive dialogue even when we disagree, and taking responsibility for the impact of our words.
We speak up when something feels wrong, supporting one another, and contribute to an inclusive environment.
We also uphold freedom of speech and academic freedom by encouraging open and respectful debate, where ideas can be explored and challenged.
This means we do not
- We do not tolerate behaviour that demeans, excludes, or dismisses others.
We do not use offensive language, personal attacks, or dismissive tones to shut down differing views.
We do not ignore harmful behaviour or assume it is someone else’s responsibility to act.
We do not restrict lawful expression or academic inquiry, but we balance this with our responsibility to ensure discussions remain respectful, lawful, and do not cause harm to others.
